Bibliomaniacs Best: Books Read in 2014

I am a list maker and a voracious reader, so when I come across a book list, I immediately look it over and check off the books I have read while marking the books I would like to read (which are all the ones I haven’t read yet).  Needless to say, when I got the HPB 2014 Calendar at the beginning of the year and saw each month had ten reading recommendations, it became my goal for the year to read as many of the books I hadn’t read on those lists that I could.  This decision opened my yearly reading to several authors I had never read Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Khaled Hosseini, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jonathan Safran Foer and Yann Martel, as well as introducing me to classics I had never read, such as Love in the Time of Cholera, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Slaughterhouse Five and The Count of Monte Cristo.  I can’t honestly say I enjoyed every book I read this year, but I can say I found some hidden gems where I had never thought to look.  Finding these new reads made me eager for more lists. So, I asked our 3,000 HPB Bibliomaniacs what was the best book they had read this year, and here’s what they had to say.

(1.) The Heart and the Bottle, by Oliver Jeffers (2.) Stuck, by Oliver Jeffers (3.) Looking for Alaska, by John Green (4.) American Gods, by Neil Gaiman (5.) The Ward, by Jordana Frankel (6.) How to be a Woman, by Caitlin Moran (7.) The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman (8.) A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway (9.) The Passion, by Jeanette Winterson (10.) Colorless, by Haruki Murakami (23.) A Bounty of Blandings, by P.G. Wodehouse (24.) Goodbye to a River, by John Graves (25.) House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski (26.) Standup Guy, by Stuart Woods

(27.) Skin Game, by Jim Butcher (28.) The Persistence of Vision, by John Varley (29.) The Ballad of Frankie Silver, by Sharyn McCrumb (30.) To Selena with Love, by Chris Perez (31.) Suspect, by Robert Crais (32.) The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck (33.) The Book of Life, by Deborah Harkness (34.) How Proust Can Change Your Life, by Alain de Botton (35.) One Second After, by William R. Forstchern (36.) Philosophy in the Flesh: The Embodied Mind & its Challenge to Western Thought, by George Lakoff & Mark Johnson (37.) The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson (38.) Tolkien: A Biography, by Humphrey Carpenter (39.) Blasphemy, by Sherman Alexie (40.) Italian Neighbors, by Tim Park  (41.) The Martian, by Andy Weir (42.) Not That Kind of Girl, by Lena Dunham (43.) A Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood (44.) Italian Days, by Barbara Grizzuti Harrison (45.) Apocalypse Cow, by Michael Logan (46.) John Dies at the End, by David Wong

The Holly Jolly HPB Holiday Playlist

Our halls are decked and the fa-la-la’s have commenced here at the HPB Corporate Office. Whether it’s a classic tune, an original song or a twist on a traditional hit, there’s nothing like hearing your favorite holiday music to really make the season bright. I thought it would be fun to survey the office on some of their top picks. Enjoy!

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love

“I always look forward to seeing Darlene Love perform this holiday classic on The Late Show with David Letterman. She has a great voice, plus the saxophone player is full of surprises every year! This was her last year to perform this song on TV due to David Letterman’s upcoming retirement”

Christmas Forever by Freddie Jackson

“Who wouldn’t want to have Christmas forever!? The words remind me of my childhood and are exactly how my family spends the holidays. I especially love the New Jack Swing sound which was popular in the early 1990’s. Sidenote: I play this song all year long…thankfully, my family hasn’t disowned me yet.”

White Christmas by Michael Bublé and Shania Twain

“I’ve always loved White Christmas, likely because I grew up in Texas and never had one until just a couple of years ago. This version, inspiried by The Drifters’ original take on the Bing Crosby classic, is so stylistically unique and interesting—it’s a song I look forward to hearing every year.”

Put a Little Love in Your Heart by The Cast of Scrooged

“It’s included in probably one of the best closing scenes from one of my favorite Christmas movies, Scrooged. Originally sung by Jackie DeShannon, you just can’t go wrong when you add Bill Murray to the mix.”

Snow by Bing Crosby

“It’s on my holiday-must playlist for a couple reasons. First, it sounds great on my gramophone (yep, I have a gramophone). And second, because it’s a family tradition to watch the movie White Christmas each year and dream about snow falling on Christmas Day (which it most likely won’t in Texas).

These are just a few of our holiday favorites. take a listen to all of them with this handy playlist.:

What are some of your favorite holiday songs?

Hollywood Does the Holidays: Yule Love These TV Classics!

When the weather outside gets frightful, the television often serves up a variety of holiday-themed episodes and specials during which we can see how our favorite friends and families from the small screen celebrate the season. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of memorable Holiday specials, episodes, and even made-for-TV movies, but here are the ones I can’t resist.

fest

Seinfeld: The Strike (1997: Season 9, Episode 10)
If you’ve never seen this classic Seinfeld ep, it’s likely that you’ve at least heard Jerry Stiller’s voice saying “Festivus, for the rest of us!” Here, Frank Costanza, George’s father, introduces us to Festivus, a new type of holiday in which, instead of a Christmas tree, there’s a Festivus pole, and instead of gift-giving, there’s an “Airing of Grievances.” Don’t like the commercialism of the holidays, or you’re not a religious person? Well, there’s always Festivus…for the rest of us.

Modern Family: Express Christmas (2011: Season 3, Episode 10)
In this episode, the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tuckers divvy up the holiday responsibilities as they need to celebrate Christmas early on December 16. Hilarity ensues as Gloria and Luke invade the attic looking for ornaments, Claire and Haley search for the perfect present, Cam and Jay bond over wrapping presents, Phil and Manny go grocery shopping, and, in my favorite part of the episode, Mitch, Alex and Lily search for a tree. It’s a great episode filled with unique pairings of your favorite ModFam characters.

armadillo

Friends: The One With the Holiday Armadillo (2000: Season 7, Episode 10)
Friends was more known for its Thanksgiving episodes, but this Christmas/Hanukkah-themed episode is certainly a fan favorite. Ross looks to teach his son Ben about Jewish holiday traditions, but he worries that skipping out on Santa will be a disappointment and thus goes in search of a new holiday mascot. When a Hanukkah-themed suit cannot be found, Ross instead invents the Holiday Armadillo, who informs Ben about Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights and more. Santa (Chandler) also makes an appearance.

A Garfield Christmas Special (1987)
A Charlie Brown Christmas and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas are certainly animated holiday classics, but for me, A Garfield Christmas is my nostalgic favorite. Jon, Garfield and Odie head to the family farm to celebrate the holidays, where we meet Jon’s sweet Mom, farmer Dad, younger brother Doc Boy, and wisecracking Grandma. Odie sneaks off to work on a secret project while Garfield learns about Grandma’s deceased husband. You just might get a bit misty-eyed when Odie gives Garfield a homemade back scratcher and Garfield presents Grandma with letters from her husband he found in the barn!

Happy Holidays, everyone! What’s a TV holiday episode you love to watch every year?

Books Authors Read with Philip Siegel

Young Adult author Philip Siegel stopped by the Dallas Flagship Half Price Books back in July as part of the Mighty Mississippi Book Blast tour and is one of the 12 fabulous authors featured in the 2015 Half Price Books – Books Authors Read calendar (which can be yours with a $30 HPB purchase! or bought for $2.99). Check out Philip’s suggestions and pick up your calendar today!

I’ve always had varied tastes in books. I love reading non-fiction as much as fast-paced YA fiction as much as sprawling general fiction. It’s good to diversify your reading, especially if you write, too. Soaking in those different author voices will help craft your own unique voice. Here are some books that I just plain LOVE, and if we ever meet in person, I’ll probably recommend them to you, too.

1) The Duff by Kody Keplinger. This book spoke to me, not just because I was (and let’s face it, still am) the fat friend. I love the mix of truthful writing, soapiness, romance, and humor in the writing. Keplinger’s books have a warm, lived-in aura to them that remind me of shows I used to watch on The WB growing up. (Dawson’s Creek, Felicity) I’ve made at least three of my friends read this novel, and whenever I’m asked for a YA recommendation, The Duff instantly comes to mind.

2) The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. I remember I found this book at a garage sale in high school and was so excited to read it. At the time, I had an obsession with the 80s and New York society. I had never read such a long book, nor such an adult book. The Bonfire of the Vanities is a searing and hilarious account of race and class in a pre-Giuliani New York. Tom Wolfe writes books with a journalistic eye, getting down every character tic and cultural detail. His books are sprawling epics that take you inside specific environments: New York in the 80s, Atlanta in the 90s, college campuses, Miami of the ‘10s. For me, a Tom Wolfe book is an event, not just because he only publishes about once a decade.

3) The Tipping Point/Outliers/Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. I’m cheating and putting these books as one because I can’t choose my favorite. They’re all fascinating, eye-opening examinations of human behavior. How does something become a fad? Why do some people succeed while others fall short? How do we make decisions? What makes these books so much more than research findings is Gladwell’s spunky writing. He’s not only giving you the facts; he’s telling you a story. He makes these topics come alive. You can feel his excitement leap off the page. Years after reading these books, I can still remember the case studies.

4) Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I know I’m not alone in loving this book, but it delivers. It delivers so hard. The twisty plot, the hyper-smart characters, the settings. I will never get the image of people sleeping in an abandoned mall out of my head. This book kept me turning pages, kept me glued to my subway seat, and blew my mind about fifteen different times. And Amy’s tirade against being “the cool girl” is worth a reread.

5) The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko. I can honestly say this book changed my life. The authors write about the truly wealthy people in America, and they’re not doctors driving BMW’s to their McMansions. They’re your unassuming neighbors next door who drive a modest car, live in a modest house, and wear non-designer clothes. The book gives countless examples about the importance of living below your means, not trying to keep up with the Joneses, and investing wisely – all lessons to live by. Never again will you be impressed by your friend’s flashy new purchase.
