Editor’s Note: SPOILER ALERT BELOW!
(Row 1: Romeo + Juliet, The Originals*; Shakespeare + Viola, The Oscar-Winners; Row 2: Clare + Henry, the Time-Crossed Lovers; Jack + Rose, in Boy-Dies-and-Leaves-Girl-to-Tell-the-Tale fashion; and Christian + Satine, in Girl-Dies-and-Leaves-Boy-to-Tell-the-Tale fashion)
I have always had a soft spot for the Star-Crossed Lovers, the ones who are hopelessly, tragically in love and yet can’t be together, whether due to circumstance or timing or, inevitably, death (and so often, death brought on by EPIC misunderstanding or missed connections– alas, alas).
These five, above, are my favorites, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg (get it? Iceberg?) — which ones am I missing? Whose tragic love tale hits you right through the heart?
*I’m aware that Romeo and Juliet are not ACTUALLY the originals — but they were certainly the breakthrough performance for the genre. Feel free to debate the rightful SCL origin story in the comments.
On that happy note, Happy V-Day, everyone! — Kristen
