Resolve to Read More in the New Year

As we start a new year, we often find ourselves looking to the past. But as the last notes of “Auld Lang Syne” are sung, we look towards to future with hope, optimism and ambition. It’s a new begininng — 2013 is a chance to give up old vices or accomplish a new goal. Perhaps you’ve already made your New Year’s resolutions. But if not, we’ve got a great challenge for you, our fellow booklovers.

Research shows that Half Price Books customers (that’s you!) read more books than the average reader. In fact, HPB customers read an average of 37 books per year, compared to the 12 books by your bookloving-counterparts. (You guys rock!) So, in 2013, we’re kicking it up a notch by challenging you to RESOLVE to READ MORE. Join us! Make the pledge to read more this year and you’ll automatically be entered to win a $100 HPB Gift Card to fuel your year’s worth of reading.

HOW TO ENTER: Go to and complete the entry form, including how many books you resolve to read in 2013. You must provide a valid email address so we can contact you if you’re the lucky winner. Limit one entry per person. Deadline to enter is Monday, January 14, 2013.*

  1. I called HPB at the Westheimer location in Houston, Texas today, 1/6/2013. I was looking for seven books needed for my college classes and Hailey was extremely helpful, patient, polite, and professional. I'm writing to give input on her awesome customer service. I visit HPB at least twice every 1-2 months, but I was extremely pleased with her assistance and fell Hailey is an asset to HPB! Thanks for your help Hailey and I know you will go far with the HPB. Keep of the high work ethics–customers like myself are pleased to interact with you.Good luck in your endeavors. Choosing to employ Hailey was a very smart move HPB.Ida

  2. I plan to read a lot of the classic's this year – Moby Dick, The Scarlett Letter, The Count of Monte Cristo, Ivanhoe, The House of Seven Gables – as well as many others. My list always changes and morphes as the year goes on! (Oh! and of course, whatever wonderful books I find at HP Books!)

  3. First, I must tell you that I am the book addicted daughter of a book addicted mother, that got it honestly from her book addicted mother and grandmother. We LOVE to shop at HPB!I finished The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron last week and I am reading Hurricane by Karen Harper now. I have committed to read at least 24 books this year, hopefully it will be more. I have shelves full of books, so whatever I grab next will be my next "Resolve to Read" book.

  4. My List is always changing but at the moment I am working through the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris and then I plan to read Clockwork Angle and Clockwork Prince By Casandra Clare again that way I'll be ready for the newest one to come out in March, Clockwork Princess.

  5. I will be reading a lot of back Star Trek books from 2006 but also so David Weber, Elizabeth Peters, some biographies, teen lit and historical dramas.

  6. My resolution is to read the dozen or so books I have on my kindle that I was able to snag for free and finish reading the books on my shelves that I have purchased or received as gifts, but "haven't had the time". In total, that's about 40 or so books.

  7. I have often thought what would I do if all the books disappeared? Since it upset me I do not think about it any more.I have solved my problem ……purchased several plastic containers and filled them up. So now I have them when I finish one I am on to the next. Reading is something I have done all my life and try to get others to enjoy as much as I do.

  8. I have a couple books that I need to read that are in my night stand. The mindful therapist and The price we paid. I love books , its just trying to find the time to read. I am looking forward to one more goal this year of reading more. Thanks Kimberly

  9. Since retirement, I resolved to read more and do indeed enjoy reading. My wife and I both do, and sometimes we share, reading the same book. I missed a lot of history in school years and now's my chance to read what I missed. I keep a stack of books which I picked out to read. When finished, I enter the name of the book, author, date completed and a brief comment, on my personal computer page: "Books Read." This is a personal choice and I enjoy doing it. My other hobby is collecting photo albums for personal enjoyment. I often share the photos on Facebook, I have described some of the books read in "My Interests," on Facebook

  10. My book list just keeps getting longer but I'm pretty excited about reading Fuse by Julianna Baggott, The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, The Walking Dead Vol. 17, and Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein.

  11. Your PDF file of suggested book titles includes The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. This is a narrative poem, not exactly a book. Still a good read, though.

  12. I keep track of the books I read each month on my blog Amanda from Seattle. I have done this for the last two years and I hope that 2013 will bring even more books and reading my way!! Half Price Books and the local library are my favorite places to get books to feed my habit!

  13. I'm reading the hobbit right now! Planning on reading Eragon and rest of the series. Then the Harry Potter series too. This will be a big challenge for me. I'm not a big reader plus it's hard for me I like to read and listen to the book too. I love the challenge of reading so many books in a year. My goal is five, but I want to go beyond that. I love to go to half price books whenever I can!

  14. I love half price books! My fianc and I go there every paycheck. He heads for the clearance DVDs, I head for the books. Right now, I'm reading the electric Michelangelo. Last year, my resolution was to read two books a month. I did that, and this year, it's my goal to read three books a month. This is the fourth one I'm working on this month already! I have a list of about 1,100 books I want to read!!
